Summarise – Cyborgs

I have to admit that my previous two blogs I was not entirely sure with what I’m doing fro my final assignment. But after reading the comments on my blog and taking advice from Chris I have a clear directory.

Over the past four years I’ve loved that I’ve learnt so many new and interesting things from digital media at uni. So instead of sticking to something I know for this assignment, I decided to go with something I didn’t know too much about. And that is why I chose cyborgs.

As someone who loves to watch movies new and old, I’ve seen a fair few involving technology, specifically cyborgs.

And I find them so interesting and wish to learn more about them.

So that’s what I’m doing with this assignment.

Although cyber culture is so large and encompasses a lot, I’m only going to focus on one aspect of it. That being cyborg in entertainment, and also ‘real life cyborgs’. People who have had modifications to their bodies and refer to themselves as cyborgs.

The above source contains many different types of ways being a cyborg can be incorporated into someones life. It is quiet amazing the things that have been made possible.

My Youtube mini series will be exploring cyborgs, hopefully my first video will be done in the next week.

  1. There’s the thought of one being a robot-enhanced human or a human-enhanced robot. I remember I commented on someone’s blog post a few weeks ago and they were looking at prosthesis. The future is leading to a point where these distinctions will begin to blur. It is common and almost becoming a thought of the past for people to think of people with prosthesis as having a disability, but the future is showing that people will opt for robotic parts just for the sake of being more efficient and have better performance. For example, if you are starting to lose eye sight and need to start paying for prescriptions glasses, one may opt for bionic eyes instead to save years of maintenance of lens prescriptions.

If you want to look at human-enhanced robots (rather than the other way around, i.e. prosthesis), you should check out David Hanson’s BINA48, where to transfer a persons mind to the robot, the person is meticulously studied of their habits, the way they move and speak, the way they think; everything. BINA48 is based on a lady called Bina Espen, married to Martine Rothblatt.

Looking into cyborgs and human-enhanced robots and vice versa, you should check out the Turing Test and look at results and such.

In terms of entertainment, you should look at cyborg roles in movies and how they relate to real-life hypothesis of a blurred world of cyborgs and humans.
